Reggie Whitehead

Reggie Whitehead, was born and raised in Miami.  However, he now spends his time between New York and Miami.
Reggie has been compared to many song and dance men.  At one moment he can sing, dance and act like Andre DeShields and  Ben Vereen, at the next turn his silky voice brings back memories of Nat King Cole, at other times he is said to be in a class of his own. But his favorite compliment is when someone compares him to Mr. Sammy Davis Jr.
Reggie believes that his involvement in theater actually began when he was a little boy and saw the movie version of Porgy and Bess, starring Sammy Davis, Jr.  After watching Sammy as
Sportin Life, Reggie wanted to be a member of the entertainment community and perhaps one day play the role of Sportin Life in Porgy and Bess.  It was not until recently that he was fortunate enough to land that role in Porgy and Bess, plus do it on a tour that took him to St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia; Warsaw, Poland, Greece, Estonia and Latvia. Reggie  was indeed humbled to finally step into a role that he had longed for his entire life; plus having the opportunity to perform on the great stages of Eastern Europe.

Reggie began in this business as a ballet dancer but soon wanted to sing as well as dance.  His first professional job was The Leading Player in Pippin, a role that he has always received rave reviews for.

Always busy in some aspect of the theater, Reggie is known as a singer, dancer, actor, choreographer and director.  In fact, he won a Curtain Up Award for Best Director of a Musical for a production of Fat’s Waller’s Ain’t Misbehavin.  This same production also won a Best Musical Curtain Up Award.
Reggie was fortunate enough to win three [South Florida] Carbonell Awards.  In 2007, Reggie received a Carbonell for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical (The Full Monty), for the role of Horse.  In 2003 he won one for for Best Choreography for his work on the musical Zombie Prom.  He also won another Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Smokey Joe’s Café, in 2002.

Some of Reggie’s other choreographic credits include Harold Arlen’s Sweet & Hot, The All Night Strut and numerous productions of Ain’t Misbehavin.

In addition to directing and choreographing, Reggie is a seasoned entertainer who has appeared in such shows as La Cage aux Folles, Pippin, A Chorus Line, Roar of the Greasepaint, Nunsense A-Men, Grand Hotel, West Side Story, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,  The All Night Strut, The Wiz, and Big River.

When not performing, Reggie is busy traveling the world in search of ferns. Yes, that right, ferns, as in the plants.  He is considered an authority on tropical ferns, and has introduced several new species to cultivation, including a new species from Sumatra, which has been named after him, Microsorum whiteheadii. In addition to Reggie’s active theater life, he also finds time to serve on the Board of Trustees for the world-renowned Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

But in the meantime, Reggie Whitehead is here to sing and dance for you.
